Results

After you complete the CHSPE your results will be mailed to you.

Please note: If your CHSPE account is not paid in full, your test results will not be provided to you until your account has been paid in full.

What You Will Receive

The documents you receive once the CHSPE is scored depends on if you passed the CHSPE or not.

If you did not pass both sections of the test, a Score Report will be mailed to you.

If you passed both sections of the test, a Score Report and Certificate of Proficiency will be mailed to you.

Ordering Transcripts and Duplicate Certificates

Your CHSPE results will not be provided to anyone else unless you request to have a transcript sent. Please see the Orders page for more information.

Duplicate Certificates can be ordered as needed. Please see the Orders page for more information.

Passing Scores

To learn more about what scores you need on each test section in order to pass, read the CHSPE Specifications document on the Resources page.

Challenging Results

The CHSPE multiple-choice questions are machine-scored in a process that is virtually error free if you follow the directions and mark the answer document properly.

The writing task is scored by trained readers, following strict scoring procedures, using the CHSPE Writing Task Rubric document which can be found on the Resources page. At least two readers independently score the essay.

If you do not pass one or both sections of the CHSPE, however, and you believe that your results do not accurately reflect your performance, you may request that your results be verified for a fee.

To request a score verification:

The fee is as follows:

  • $25.00 for the Mathematics section only

  • $25.00 for the Reading subtest only

  • $35.00 for the Language subtest only

Fees must be paid by a bank-issued cashier's check or money order payable to the California Department of Education.

Requests must be received by mail in the CHSPE Office within three months after the test date, and you may only request verification for a specific test section and date once. Requests that are telephoned, faxed, or e-mailed will not be accepted. If the request form is not signed by the examinee, if proper payment is not included, or if the form is received after the deadline, the form will be returned unprocessed.

Upon receipt of the Results Verification Request Form and payment, your CHSPE performance will be reviewed. Your responses to the multiple choice questions will be scored by hand. For the English Language Arts Language subtest, trained and experienced readers will review your essay and review the scores it originally received to determine if the scores are consistent with the Writing Task Rubric.

A result verification will only determine whether or not the original score was correct. The CHSPE Office cannot provide feedback on your essay.

Notification of the outcome of the review will be mailed to you within three weeks of receipt of your request. Results will not be provided by telephone.

Following the review,

If your results on a section (or subtest) change from "not pass" to "pass," you will be sent a revised score report and your unprocessed money order or bank-issued cashier's check will be returned to you. (Keep the receipt for your money order or cashier's

check; you may need it to get your money back in the event you need to return your money order or cashier’s check.)

As a result of the review process, if you have passed both CHSPE sections, you will be issued a Certificate of Proficiency, and, if you attend K–12 public school and provided your school's name on your registration form, your name will be added to the roster of passing examinees provided to your school and

district.

If the review does not result in a change from "not pass" to "pass", you will be notified and your money order or cashier's check will be retained as payment.

Voiding of Results

Reasonable security precautions are taken in the development, administration and scoring of the CHSPE.

The California Department of Education and the CHSPE Office reserve the right to void any CHSPE score for inappropriate behavior at the testing site or if, in their opinion, there is adequate reason to question the validity or legitimacy of the registration or score.

If doubts are raised about your registration or score, the CHSPE Office will notify the California Department of Education and other parties as deemed appropriate by the Department.

Other Uses of CHSPE Scores

If you attend a K–12 public school, and you provided your school's name on your registration form, when you have passed both sections of the CHSPE your name will be included on a roster of passing examinees made available to your school district. The CHSPE Office reserves the right to report passers to private schools and charter schools who request information regarding their students who take the CHSPE.

CHSPE data for all examinees (passers and non-passers) at each administration will be provided to the California Department of Education.
